This is our missions team, sponsored by UMC of Mt Pleasant. They have been traveling to areas hit by floods & hurricanes since 2005. In August 2005 a Category 3 hurricane struck Louisiana and Mississippi. Over 1800 people died and an estimated $81 billion worth of damage was caused. Most of this damage occurred in low-lying areas where the poor and disenfranchised people lived. We were all shocked at the devastion and destruction of this event. The natural questions arose: How can we help? What can we/I do? The initial response teams immediately descended upon the affected area, but they would only be there for a short time to get control of the situation. Who would be there to carry on the work needing to be done? Enter the Because We Care mission team. This group of individuals from various churches in the area, mostly United Methodist churches came together and decided to offer their assistance in the rebuilding of the region. From that moment this team of approximately 43 members have continued to assist in recovery several more times in Louisiana, Indiana, New York, Tennessee, and this fall in West Virginia. Projects have included new roofs, new ramps, rebuilding the inside of homes devastated by flood waters, plastering, painting, landscaping, insulating, electrical, and plumbing installation. This group ranging in age from the 20’s to the 70’s, and includes male and female members, is willing to do whatever is needed within the gifts of the group. The work that the group has accomplished has been nothing short of amazing, but the most important work they do is offer Jesus Christ to those affected by adversity; and in return for the bumps, bruises, broken ankles, and sprained wrists, they receive love from those they serve. The group develops relationships with the individuals whose homes are being repaired. Each place is a new adventure and experience, and each opportunity allows the group to live out Matthew 28 by sharing the Good News in all the world. The Because We Care team is always open to new members, and will welcome you and your gifts. Don’t worry that you cannot hammer, saw, plumb or do electrical work; there is always plenty of work for those willing to serve the Lord. The team members extend your gratitude for their work and service to the Lord. Your appreciation and support both spiritually and financially are always welcome. The Team has recently been to Oakhill, WV to assist the families there. Please contact Bryon Jackson or any other member of the Team if you are interested in joining the team.
